Frequently Asked Questions
What does this mean for Staffordshire?
While the government has proposed unitary authorities for areas with populations over 500,000, it remains undecided how Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent will be reorganised. Multiple proposals are being considered, and there is no consensus yet among the local councils.
Most proposed models suggest that all existing County, District, Borough, and possibly Stoke-on-Trent City Councils would be dissolved and replaced with one or more new unitary authorities.
Who decides on these changes?
The final decision lies with the UK Government, based on proposals submitted by local authorities. A decision is expected by early 2026.
Will residents get a say?
Yes, consultation with the public is expected between March and November 2025. Residents will be informed and invited to give feedback. There is no indication of how this will happen
